Staying at Rifugio Plose

The first night of Alta Via 2, rebuilt from the inside: an 1887 Alpine Club hut with new rooms, a wood stove and the Odle on the horizon.

Rifugio Plose stands at 2,447 m on the broad summit ridge above Bressanone, the highest hut on the Plose and the natural first night of Alta Via 2. Built in 1887 by the Bressanone section of the Alpine Club, it is one of the oldest huts in South Tyrol, and since 2025 it has been run by Claudia and Fabrizio, two mountain people from Piedmont who renovated it top to bottom. The view does the rest: the Odle and Puez to the south, the Ortles and the Venosta peaks to the west, the Isarco valley a vertical kilometre below.

Staying the night

66 beds after the renovation, in two kinds of rooms: six private rooms with their own bathroom (three doubles, three for four) and seven dormitories of five to eight beds with shared bathrooms. Wide windows, pale wood and a wood-burning stove in the dining room give it a lighter feel than most huts of its age. Wi-Fi is free, and the hut can move your luggage up with the lifts, which makes it an easy first night for a long route.

The food

A bar and restaurant with a short, local menu: simple plates built on South Tyrolean ingredients, breakfast, half or full board, and an evening aperitivo on the terrace when the weather plays along. Take-away at altitude is on offer for day walkers.

Booking reality

Easier than the famous huts: the room types and the online booking page on the hut's own site make it a two-minute job, and the large dormitories leave space even in August. The hut told us it runs 23 May to 4 October in 2026, with 22 May to 1 November planned for 2027.

Getting there

The easy way is the Plose cable car from Sant'Andrea above Bressanone, then about one hour on foot along the ridge. On foot from the valley it is a long climb of around 1,300 m. For Alta Via 2 walkers it is the end of day one from Bressanone and the start of the stage to Rifugio Genova over the Forcella di Putia.

Good to know

  • A live webcam on the Plose lift site shows the weather on the ridge before you commit to the cable car.
  • Luggage transport by lift (or by snowmobile in winter) can be arranged with the hut.
  • Open every day in season; the hut sits on the ski pistes and runs a winter season too.
