Variant without via ferrata: an extra night at Rifugio Son Forca where the official stage takes a bus, Rifugio Faloria instead of the cabled Forcella Grande, and the finish at Lago di Pontesei instead of the Tovanella bivouac.
Alta Via 3, the 'Via dei Camosci' (Chamois Way), runs north-to-south through the wildest corner of the Dolomites: from Villabassa in the Val Pusteria down to Longarone in the Belluno valley, crossing the Cadini di Misurina, Sorapiss, Marmarole and Antelao groups.
It is technically harder than AV1, with exposed cabled traverses on several days and one mandatory via ferrata (the Sentiero Vandelli around the Sorapiss lake), but it receives a fraction of the traffic. Most days end at small, family-run rifugi where you'll be one of fifteen guests, not one of eighty.
